Non-Binary Society, Binary Barriers examines non-binary identities and the social, cultural and institutional conditions that shape how they are understood and recognised. Based on a roundtable discussion with students from the Gender Studies Department at the University of Innsbruck, the project brings together a wide range of lived experiences, reflections and everyday practices of navigating identity. It treats language and representation as key arenas in which established norms are both reproduced and challenged, and considers how they can open possibilities for more inclusive and self-reflective environments. The project also underscores the intersectional character of non-binary life, showing how identity, cultural background and linguistic context interact to influence experiences of marginalisation as well as forms of agency within contemporary society.
